Arielyte Tsen Chung Ming

Engineering Cadet Scholar 2015

Singapore Polytechnic, Diploma in Computer Engineering

Back when Prime Minister Lee first launched the Smart Nation Initiative, I dreamt of being at the forefront of Singapore’s technological transformation from a first world country to becoming a smart nation. That dream became a reality when I had the privilege to work with the Product Management team at NCS’ Smart & Safe City, Centre of Excellence. There, I had opportunities to take on different tasks and responsibilities. Every day presented a new challenge for me. Among many other things, I learnt about emerging technologies not taught in class and industry best practices. Never had I learnt so much in so short a time span. The learning curve was steep but the sense of achievement at the end of the day was ultimately rewarding. Throughout the course of my internship, my mentors were always there to offer me guidance and support. Their tenacity and dedication to excellence motivated me to push past my comfort zone and strive for personal excellence. I also found that Singtel’s work culture is rooted in a strong sense of team spirit and camaraderie. Work aside, Singtel was also a place where I could build bridges with people of diverse culture and backgrounds. Overall, it has been a rewarding experience to be an Engineering Cadet at Singtel.

Lee Tze Ting

Cyber Security Cadet Scholar 2015

Singapore Polytechnic, Diploma in Infocomm Security Management

As a Singtel Cyber Security Cadet Scholar, I had the opportunity to take on an internship stint in the Engineering and Incubation department under the SHINE internship program. I was glad to be given the opportunity to research and evaluate emerging products, which helped to build up my industry knowledge. This experience has helped me build on the fundamentals that I have learnt in school by seeing how knowledge is applied in the industry. During my internship, I also interacted with other interns from other departments to learn about the diverse roles and career opportunities available in Singtel.

Upon graduation from Singapore Polytechnic, I chose to return to the department where I had completed my internship, to serve my one year bond and deepen my understanding in this specialised area. Over this one year period, I was able to see through the completion of a project which further enhanced my learning and gave me new insights and perspectives. This fruitful learning experience was a memorable one especially with the support and guidance of my colleagues and manager. Looking back on both experiences, I would have to say that it has been a fulfilling experience working in Singtel and I am confident my work experience will continue to aid my learning when I enter university to pursue further studies.

As a Singtel Cyber Security Cadet Scholar, not only was I given the chance to be exposed to different areas in cyber security, I was also able to experience handling and managing firewalls, intrusion prevention system, log management server, email security appliance and other security appliances during my internship. These experiences further developed my interest in IT security and enhanced my knowledge in the cyber security world. Upon graduation, I decided to return to the Technology Service team to continue my work as an IT Security Consultant, where I am responsible for ensuring the functionality of network security appliances. With the guidance from my colleagues, I am now able to assist end users with their enquiries, perform troubleshooting and upgrade the technical functionality of their appliances. I have found Singtel to be a great place to work. In fact, I am glad that I signed up for the Singtel Cyber Security Cadet scholarship and sincerely appreciate Singtel for giving me the chance to take on such a fascinating role.

Eunice Ang

Customer Experience Cadet Scholar 2015

Republic Polytechnic, Diploma in Customer Relationship and Service Management

During the 6-month internship with Singtel as a Customer Experience Scholar, I was given opportunities to learn and develop my skills in managing both technical and general enquiries to prepare for my role as a Customer Service Officer (CSO). As I started to serve my bond in Singtel as a CSO, I learnt that I could use specific words and phrases to calm people down and practice empathy over the phone. What surprised me was how a word of kindness or appreciation from the customer can also make my day. This gives me great satisfaction and pride for the work I do. Having experienced the role of a Customer Service Officer, it is definitely more challenging than I had thought. However, I am motivated to bring a smile and make a difference for my customers. In future, I look forward to opportunities to rotate to different departments to learn different skillsets and to continue contributing back to Singtel.

Lim Liang Yu

Customer Experience Cadet Scholar 2015

Republic Polytechnic, Diploma in Customer Relationship and Service Management

As a Singtel Customer Experience Cadet Scholar, I had the opportunity to do an internship at Singtel’s Contact Centre where I handled in-bound calls to address enquiries and resolve any technical difficulties faced by customers. A full training course was conducted to prepare me for this role, where I learnt more about Singtel’s products and basic troubleshooting for common technical issues. Most importantly, I learnt how to think from the customer’s perspective and deliver a good customer experience. My work at the Singtel Contact Centre has been an eye opening experience. It was a rewarding to be able to put the knowledge and skills learnt in school into practice. Though it is at times challenging, as there are customers who are difficult to deal with, I am glad to have the support and guidance of my team members who are ever so willing to teach me the ropes. I am enjoying my work at Singtel thus far, and looking forward to deepening my understanding of the ins and outs behind the customer handling process.
