Tay Bak Chiang

Tay Bak Chiang | 郑木彰 (b. 1973, Malaysia) is a contemporary artist who draws inspiration from the natural environment of Singapore and Southeast Asia. He interprets anew themes of nature such as stones, lotus ponds, birds and flowers. 

Tay trained at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (1992 to 1995) and the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, China (1997). His accolades include the Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Award (Chinese Painting) from the Singapore Art Society (1999 and 2002), First Prize (Traditional Chinese Medium) in the 19th and 22nd UOB Painting of the Year competitions (2000 and 2003), and the National Arts Council’s Young Artist Award (2002).

Tay has exhibited in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, South Korea, France and the United Kingdom. His solo exhibitions include The Breath of a Blade at the Jendela visual arts space at The Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay (2013). Tay’s group exhibitions include Now and Next – Modern Paintings of Korea, Japan, Singapore at the Gwangju National Museum, Korea (2010) and Made in Singapore – Three Quarters of a Century at NAFA Gallery, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (2013).

Tay’s works have been collected by Singtel, the Istana, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, the National Arts Council and the National Gallery Singapore.
