Here’s how you can reduce your petrol costs and cope with rising petrol prices in Singapore.

The cost of owning a car in Singapore is higher than before and a large part of this is fuelled by rising petrol costs. Petrol prices in Singapore hit new highs in June, in part due to a global increase in energy demand and the Russia-Ukraine war. Though petrol prices may have dipped recently, it still pays to be prudent and save where you can to hedge against future changes.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom. Spiralling pump prices may be out of your control, but cutting down on petrol prices is well within your reach. Besides choosing the right type of petrol for your car, here are four other ways to save on petrol in Singapore.

1. Plan your route

Did you know that an idle engine is one of the fastest ways to burn your fuel? Avoid wasting your petrol by planning your route in advance. Steer clear of traffic jams, and avoid driving during peak periods where possible. Stay updated on traffic news by checking live conditions on OneMotoring, Google Maps, or by tuning in to the radio.

If you find yourself waiting in a traffic standstill nonetheless, consider switching your engine off as an idle engine consumes more fuel than restarting your engine.

2. Drive safely

Besides giving you better odds at avoiding car accidents, driving safely can also help you save on petrol. Speeding, as well as sudden braking and accelerating, consumes your fuel more than it should.

Rather than wasting your petrol, practice safe driving habits by keeping a safe distance from other cars to avoid unnecessary braking. Be aware of traffic conditions and adjust your speed accordingly, such as slowing down gradually ahead of a red light instead of coming to a hard stop.

Last but not least, don’t speed. It may be tempting to rev down an empty highway but that burns into your fuel more than anything. Instead of making frequent accelerations, aim to keep at a steady speed to minimise fuel consumption.

3. Take care of your car

Regular car maintenance doesn’t just improve road safety, but also helps you save money. This includes checking your tire pressure, cleaning your air filter regularly and making sure you’re not overloading your car with unnecessary weight.

Deflated tires not only lead to premature wear and tear, but also leads to more resistance and negatively impacts your fuel efficiency. Avoid this by checking your tires regularly and keeping them inflated at the recommended range.

Also make sure you clean your air filters regularly as clogged air filters can restrict airflow to your engine and increase fuel consumption. On top of that, avoid hoarding items in your boot as the heavier your car is, the more fuel it consumes.

4. Leverage on discounts and freebies

With petrol prices hitting all time highs, it pays to shop around for the best deals that you can get. Common ways of achieving this include tapping on credit card discounts as well as loyalty or reward programmes from the various petrol brands. But those aren’t the only ways.

Keep your eyes peeled for promotions and lucky draws by petrol brands, banks, and even insurers! For instance, from 1-31 December 2022, Singtel Car Protect gives you $200 worth of petrol vouchers that are guaranteed when you purchase any car insurance plan.
