One of three batik paintings by Chieu that document kampong life, a farming couple stands proud against an agricultural backdrop, with a huge sun dominating. The graphic treatment of the subject is modern in spirit, bearing the influence of the Nanyang artists who embraced the life and landscape of Singapore and Malaya as their new home. Chieu’s other two paintings in the Singtel collection depict a domestic scene of two women ironing, and a fisherman with his simple catch.

Chieu’s work in batik is reflective of other batik painting practitioners like his teacher Cheong Soo Pieng, Chuah Thean Teng, and Jaafar Latiff, his peer. His composition seems derived from folk art as well as socialist works with a poster effect.

Apart from batik, Chieu worked with metal and mixed media to create modernist compositions symptomatic of artworks from the 1970s to early 1990s in Singapore.
