Tung Yue Nang's series of hyper-real paintings of Peranakan artifacts are skillfully rendered, and appear to be actual three-dimensional objects. The paintings were developed from an earlier series where he painted creased paper and pebbles on his canvases. These, as with the Peranakan works, were arranged with permutations of sets of similar objects. Painted carefully in acrylic so that the surfaces are completely flat, the paintings visually appear to have a strong tactile quality. This piece features several Peranakan bowls of various designs and antique Chinese combs. The decorated objects bear images of peonies and the phoenix. These objects are all linked to the culture of the Peranakan woman.
Other works by Tung Yue Nang in the Singtel collection include Untitled (Peranakan Slippers) (1994), Red on White (1995), Black on White (1995), My Lucky Year I and II (1999), and Sunshine series I and II (2000).
