What is Teams UC Connector?

27 April 2021 | SMB, Digitalisation, Voice and Collaboration | 5 min read

Digital platforms like Microsoft Teams allow for seamless collaboration for teams working both in the office and remotely. With Teams Unified Communications (UC) connector to enable PSTN calling capabilities, staying in touch and collaboration becomes even easier. Here’s a brief guide on its benefits for businesses.

How Teams UC Connector works

Teams UC Connector enhances the communications functionality available in Microsoft Teams. It allows your employees to make and receive calls via the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) using the Teams app on multiple operating systems and devices.

By integrating with the PSTN, you can make and receive calls to and from landlines and mobile phones. This means your existing business numbers still work and employees are contactable outside the office via Teams.

Teams UC Connector supports calling out of the box. If your company has an existing Microsoft 365 subscription, companies just need to add on the Teams UC Connector, a Microsoft Phone License and Microsoft Business Voice License to their current subscription. You can then access available Teams UC Connection functionalities by clicking on the Calls tab on the Teams app without any need to invest in hardware or incur large implementation cost.

Teams UC Connector features

With Teams UC Connector installed, your Microsoft Teams application now offers the following features:

  • Use your existing fixed line numbers or assign phone numbers to employees
  • Dial pad for calling right within the Teams app
  • Access to email and phone contacts as well as call history
  • Voicemail (you can either listen to or read a transcript of messages)
  • Call forwarding, transfer, and hold
  • Call queues where you can create custom greetings and play music for customers while they’re on hold
  • Auto attendant to route incoming calls to the right queues based on set parameters such as availability, language, or time zone
  • Dial-in numbers for more flexible meetings and audio conferencing
  • Add-on options such as voice recording

Benefits of Teams UC Connector for businesses

Your business stands to gain these benefits with Calling in Teams:

Reduced costs

As it is 100% cloud-based, no on-premises equipment is required, eliminating infrastructure and maintenance costs. You also won’t need to manage a legacy PBX (Private Branch Exchange) solution with outsourced IT support. Moreover, you can start small and scale up as and when required.

Increased productivity

Teams UC Connector and the Microsoft Teams app are device-agnostic and works across laptops, PCs, and mobile devices. Employees can easily add other team members to calls, enabling seamless communication.

Enhanced security

It allows for secure connectivity with a dedicated Wildcard SSL certificate. You can make carrier-grade calls on a secure private network.

Unified communications strategy

Streamline business communications with voice capabilities under a single workspace. Enjoy chat, online audio and video meetings, and full phone system functionality whether you’re in or out of the office.
