12 Samsung phone tricks you never knew you needed

Want to make the most out of your Samsung phone?

In this article, we highlight 12 Samsung phone tricks for you to try out.

Most of the video tutorials you see in this article are recorded on a Samsung Galaxy A33 5G, and are accurate as of time of publishing (13 Sep 2023). Some settings may vary in different Samsung phone models.

#1: Create your very own GIFs from videos

Watching an iconic video clip that resonates SO much with you?

Here's a phone trick you can try: create a GIF from any video using Samsung's Smart Select - no third-party apps necessary!

Other than creating GIFs from your favourite shows or movies, you can also create GIFs from videos of yourself or your friends and family.

Or perhaps you’d like to create a GIF of your pet’s cute moments! 🐶

You can even add text on to your GIF to add your own touch of flair.

Here’s how you do it:

#2: Hide apps, files, photos, and more with Secure Folder

Next on our list of Samsung tricks... did you know that the newer Samsung Galaxy phones come with a pre-installed hidden folder that you can use?

It’s like having your very own safe in a phone!

And this isn’t just a hidden folder for pictures and videos.

In the Secure Folder, you can hide other files, including ENTIRE apps.

To keep the folder protected, you can simply set a password or PIN, or enable a fingerprint scan.

Here’s how to create a Secure Folder:

PS: Older Samsung Galaxy phones don’t have the Secure Folder pre-installed, but you can easily go to the Settings app and toggle it on.

#3: Customisable split-screen view

Samsung phones are great for multi-tasking, because of its Multi Window function.

Basically, this allows you to open and use two apps simultaneously!

You can even pin part of an app (e.g. a video or a Google Maps route) in split-screen mode.

The quickest way you can split your screen is to navigate to your recent apps, tap the app icon, and tap on ‘Open in split-screen view’.

Then click on the other app you want to use, and that’s it!

#4: Mute calls with a screen flip or a hovering hand

Imagine you’re in a work meeting.

Your phone starts ringing or vibrating loudly, and everyone's looking at you.

How embarrassing! 😰

Well, here’s a cool Samsung phone trick you can try: you can enable a feature that lets you mute calls and alarms by flipping your phone upside down on a flat surface.

Alternatively, you can place your hand over the screen, and it'll mute your calls/alarms too.

To enable this feature:

  • Go to ‘Settings’

  • Tap on the ‘Advanced Features’ option

  • Tap on ‘Motions and Gestures’

  • Toggle the ‘Turn over to Mute’ option

#5: Personalising your audio experience with advanced sound settings

If you’re an audiophile and highly enthusiastic about sound experience, this one’s for you.

Most Samsung phones provide the option of tweaking your settings to find your ideal sound mix.

To personalise your audio experience, go to ‘Settings’, then ‘Sound quality and effects’ under ‘Sounds and vibration.

Here, you have a few options:

  1. Dolby Atmos (rich surround sound)

  2. Dolby Atmos for gaming (rich surround sound that will be amplified during gaming)

  3. Equaliser (allows you to adjust the frequency of sound or choose from presets)

  4. UHQ Upscaler (this enhances the sound resolution for clearer listening)

  5. Adapt sound

The ‘Adapt Sound’ feature is pretty interesting because it allows you to select from 3 different sound presets based on age range.

There’s a sound preset for those who are:

  • Under 30 years old (where sound frequencies are boosted to high range)

  • 30 to 60 years old (where sound frequencies are boosted to mid/high range)

  • Over 60 years old (where all sound frequencies are boosted)

You can even take a hearing test to curate a sound effect of your liking!

#6: Share files using Samsung’s QuickShare

Just like the AirDrop on Apple phones, Samsung’s QuickShare lets you share images, videos, and files without the need for pairing devices!

Here’s the best part – you can use QuickShare with anyone, not just Samsung or Galaxy users.

Here’s how you can turn on the QuickShare feature:

Source: Samsung

  • If you’re sharing with a Galaxy device, press the Quick Share icon, choose the correct Galaxy device, and the Galaxy user can then accept the file.

  • If you’re sharing with a non-Galaxy device, press the Quick Share icon and choose whether you want to copy the link, share in an app or share using QR code. The other user will be able to copy or scan the code and receive the file instantly on their smartphone.

#7: Watch videos in brighter and more vivid colours with Video Enhancer

We previously talked about getting a better sound experience using Samsung sound settings.

On top of that, Samsung also gives you the option to elevate your video experience!

You can do this with the Video Enhancer feature, which temporarily increases the screen brightness and makes the colours of videos more vibrant.

Video Enhancer supports content from the video player, YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video, Google Play Movies & TV.

Just make sure your Video Enhancer is on, and it’ll change your screen brightness and settings whenever you start viewing any of the above content.

Once you exit any of these apps, the video settings will go back to default mode.

#8: Become a pro-Samsung user with Developer Mode

Here’s a Samsung phone hack that’s fun to play around with if you’re a software developer or a tech enthusiast: Samsung Developer Mode.

This lets you configure your phone settings and debug your app performance – it’s perhaps one of Samsung’s most powerful features.

With Developer Mode, you can program your phone to do things like:

  • Stay awake when the device is plugged in

  • Display memory stats

  • Speed up your phone

  • Enable Demo Mode (this is a feature designed to help users give presentations do app testing without revealing sensitive information or having unintended interruptions)

  • Aggressive WiFi to cellular handover (this feature automatically directs a weak WiFi data connection to stronger and more stable mobile data, when appropriate)

Here’s how you turn on Developer Mode:

#9: Samsung phones come with a built-in document scanner

Need to scan a document quickly?

This is where Samsung’s built-in document scanner comes in handy.

Simply open the camera app on your Samsung phone, point it at the document you wish to scan, tap the ‘T Scan’ icon, and click on ‘Save’.

This is especially useful for work, or if you need to scan important items (e.g. your IC, birth certificate, or health documents).

#10: Use your entire Samsung keyboard as a cursor

When you're using your phone, it’s sometimes tough to select text from a paragraph or navigate to a certain point in a paragraph.

Maybe the cursor is too small, or maybe our fingers are too chubby 🤷‍♀️

But with Samsung’s Cursor Control feature, you’ll be able to use your entire keyboard as a cursor.

This makes it easier to navigate to a particular paragraph.

When this feature is toggled, simply long-press the spacebar on the keyboard and it will transform into a white space for you to slide anywhere!

[Bonus: If you hold ‘Shift’ and swipe anywhere on your keyboard, it will highlight text as you do so!]

#11: Floating shutter button for easier photo-taking

If you often take group selfies, you’ll know how it's sometimes difficult to reach the shutter button to snap a picture.

Everyone’s crowding around you, and you’re raising your phone as high as possible so everyone’s in the shot.

From here, you’ll need to stretch your thumb awkwardly to reach for the shutter button, making sure that your phone doesn’t wobble in the process.

Enter Samsung’s floating shutter button!

With this feature, you can position the shutter button anywhere on your phone screen to avoid those awkward hands during selfies.

To enable this:

  • Open the ‘Camera’ app

  • Click on ‘Settings’

  • Tap ‘Shooting Methods’

  • Enable the ‘Floating Shutter Button’

#12: Different commands for photo-taking

Here’s a phone trick that everyone’s sure to love!

Did you know that Samsung phones have both voice and gesture commands to make photo-taking easier?

This is especially helpful when you want to take shots from further away (not just selfies).

For gesture commands, simply hold out your palm for your phone to snap a photo hands-free.

For voice commands, these are the words you say to snap a shot:

  • ‘Smile’

  • ‘Capture’

  • ‘Shoot’

  • ‘Cheese’

  • ‘Record Video’ (this is for video recording)

Whether you’re using voice and gesture commands, both situations will trigger a self-timer, giving you enough time to pose for your shot.
