Celebrating National Day the Singtel way

By Marcina Wang

Singaporeans will be in for a treat this National Day, as Singtel has two performances, both starring our very talented staff, lined up to celebrate the occasion.

Come 9 August, look out for the 10-member Singtel marching contingent, who will be part of the “Strength of our Nation” morning program, which will start at 10.30am. Keep an eye out for our team as they show off their marching drills in a special virtual segment!

As you count down to National Day, check out Singtel’s second performance: an original song written and performed by our very own musical talents! Upbeat, modern, and irresistibly catchy, “We’re One” might just be your new favourite NDP jam. Check out the video on Instagram now!

Special interview: Fauzianna and Yue Qi

Singtel staff Fauzianna Shamsudin (from the Consumer Operations team) and Choo Yue Qi (from the Enterprise Mobility & Bid Management team) are the talents behind “We’re One”, composing and lending their vocals to the song.

We speak to Fauzi and Yue Qi, on the inspiration behind the song and their experience filming a music video from home.

What message did you want to convey with the song “We’re One”?

Fauzi: We wanted something that represented togetherness, not just with Singtel, but with the whole of Singapore, especially during this time of COVID. We would like every Singaporean to feel that they are included, and can do their part for the country. I hope this song helps people feel that way.

How did you come up with the song, and what was it like filming the video while observing social distancing measures?

Fauzi: The song came naturally to us. We would just be doing our day-to-day jobs and then start humming. We came up with the beat by tapping on our laptops. We took a trial-and-error approach while writing the song, and kept modifying the music and lyrics before we got to this rendition.

Yue Qi: It was really hard filming the video! The lip synching and dancing parts had to be filmed in our individual homes. We kept thinking of ways to make the video more dynamic, that’s why we used a lot of special effects.

In the video, we wanted to honour the Singtel contingents at past years’ NDPs. We wanted to show how we’ve evolved from then to now. Lots of the volunteers who helped out with the video were actually in past years’ Singtel NDP contingents, and we wanted to show how, despite everything, we can still be together in some way now.

“We’re One” was a group effort, led by Mr Tong Kok Yeo from the Singtel Rec Club, and aided by many volunteers from the Singtel Rec Club Music Interest Group.

Happy National Day from us to you!
