9 easy ways to improve weak WiFi at home

better-wifi

If there’s one thing we all hate, it’s a weak WiFi signal at home.

Imagine sitting at your laptop, watching the live stream of a football game.

The tension rises, the crowd roars... and BAM!

IT LAGS! 😭

And you miss the winning goal!

If this sounds like a nightmare to you, you’re in luck.

We’re here to share some tips and tricks for enhancing your WiFi performance so you won’t find yourself in that situation.

Here are a couple of ways on how to improve your WiFi performance:

#1: Place your WiFi router in a central location

You may have read that header and gone, “Well, duh!” but it’s an important point to take note of.

Don't just plonk your WiFi router next to your TV.

Instead, find a central spot (roughly of equal distance to each room in your home) and place it there.

#2: Place your WiFi router in an open location

Your WiFi router should always be in an open location.

Do: place your router at an open and elevated spot, like on a high shelf or cupboard.

Do not: place your router near walls or tall furniture – this obstructs the flow of the signal, slowing down your WiFi.

In Singaporean households, hiding your router in your DB box (distribution box) seems to be a thing, especially amongst homeowners who are going for the minimalist look.

But this is a no-no – like we said, find an open location instead!

#3: Get a WiFi mesh extender

WiFi dead spots can be annoying – but that’s where WiFi mesh extenders come in.

Think of a mesh extender like an extension cord – it extends your WiFi to different corners of the house.

It’s especially useful in large houses with a complex layout, multiple floors, or lots of tall furniture that obstruct the WiFi signal.

Just place a WiFi mesh extender in a dead spot in your home, and it’ll help with your connection.

#4: Get the latest WiFi version for optimal strength

When it comes to WiFi, we all want the fastest and strongest connection possible.

So, it makes sense to get the best WiFi technology – which is WiFi 6 and 7!

If you’re still on WiFi 5, it’s time to upgrade.

With WiFi 6 and 7, you’ll enjoy a faster, stronger and even more secure connection.

Between these two, WiFi 6 should be sufficient for most folks, but if you WFH a lot, or you’re a content creator, streamer or gamer, you might want to check out WiFi 7.

For WiFi 6, we recommend Singtel’s 2Gbps Mesh plan, which comes with a FREE lifestyle gadget such as an iPad or Dyson vacuum cleaner.

And for WiFi 7, check out Singtel’s WiFi 7 + 10Gbps broadband plan.

#5: Turn off wireless devices when not in use

Almost everything we use nowadays is completely wireless.

While it’s convenient to use, it can also cause disruptions to our WiFi signal.

When wireless devices are left on, they continue to emit signals and consume bandwidth, even if you're not using them.

By turning off these devices, you free up the bandwidth, making your connection better.

#6: Create a strong WiFi password

Who’s guilty of using the same basic password for everything? 🙋

Don’t be that person whose password is so easy to guess, to the point where all your neighbours are leaching onto your WiFi.

If that happens, this will slow down your bandwidth, giving you a poor connection.

Instead, use a strong password - which consists of capital letters, numbers and at least 1 special character (. , !).

#7: Reboot your WiFi

'Have you tried turning it off and on again?'

Believe it or not, this can help to reset and improve your connection.

There are 2 ways to reboot your router:

Find the restart button on your router and press and hold until it restarts

Disconnect the router from the power socket and plug it back in

Be patient – the process may take more than 10 minutes!

#8: Check your PC

Sometimes the problem might not even be the WiFi, but your computer.

If other devices like your phone and tablets are working fine but your computer is laggy, here’s what you can do.

Open your Task Manager or Activity Monitor and see what's running in the background.

If you find apps that you don’t use often updating, put it on hold or stop it. (Or even better – delete those apps!)

All that unnecessary activity could be using up your bandwidth and slowing down your internet speed.

#9: Use My Singtel App

If you’re looking to find that WiFi sweet spot in your home, look no further than My Singtel App.

The app has a feature that lets you scan your surroundings in real-time to pinpoint the spot with the strongest WiFi connectivity.

This feature is only available on Android phones, and you can use the feature regardless of whether you are a Singtel customer.
