Improving productivity via automation and innovation

For Mr Hui Wing Feh, Director, Kurve Automation Pte Ltd (Kurve), automation has two great transforming powers. Firstly, in transforming Kurve from an industrial design consultancy to one that leverages robotics to carve a niche in food automation. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, Mr Hui sees automation as an important means to improve productivity, in the face of Singapore’s aging population and manpower policy to reduce reliance on foreign labour.

It is with these in mind that Kurve partnered Universal Robots, a Danish manufacturer of flexible industrial robotic arms, in early 2016. By devising innovative applications such as its new egg breakfast robot system, Kurve aims to automate low-value, repetitive job functions with his customised robots. “Unlike typical automation functions which involve just a handful of processes, our egg breakfast system involves up to 30 processes. This enables one robotic arm to manage four varied egg orders, from sunny side-ups to scrambled eggs, concurrently. It saves time and manpower for the labour tight food service industry” said Mr Hui.

Mr Hui has the intention of developing a fully integrated system which can transmit the customer orders from a touch screen eMenu system to the robot for it to execute the order. The system can also have a temperature control function to maintain optimum temperature for the food items and this data is stored in the cloud. With seamless connectivity these days, Mr Hui feels that it is not difficult to achieve this.

Recollecting his transformation journey, Mr Hui was able to kick-start this new robotics business because of a funding from SPRING Singapore.

“With so many government initiatives supporting automation, now is the time to take advantage of these grants to innovate and differentiate,” concluded Mr Hui.
