The smartphone arena is largely dominated by industry giants like Apple and Samsung, making it challenging for smaller players to break through.
But even if you’re a loyal Apple fan or Samsung fan, you’ll want to sit up and pay attention to OPPO’s latest launch – the OPPO Reno10 Pro+.

The newest OPPO phone is powered with a high-end chipset, an advanced image processor and a camera with a whopping 64-megapixel sensor (this is the highest spec periscope telephoto camera available on any smartphone, ever).
Simply put, it’s a phone that’s a worthy contender when pitted against flagship models from the bigger players.
Here are the phone’s specs:

The latest addition to the OPPO Reno series comes with a total of four cameras – three rear cameras and one front camera.
Here are the four cameras that the phone comes with:
A 50-megapixel main camera
A 64-megapixel Telephoto portrait camera
A 32-megapixel ultrawide camera
A 32-megapixel front camera
The most exciting feature about this 4-camera OPPO phone is the 64-megapixel Telephoto portrait camera, which is the highest spec periscope telephoto camera available on any smartphone.
The term “periscope telephoto camera” means that the camera can achieve higher levels of optical zoom without the need for a bulky lens.
With this camera, you can zoom in on distant subjects without losing image quality, and while maintaining a slim phone design.
If you look at their website, the pictures showcasing the zoom function are really impressive.
Here’s the 1x vs 3x zoom:

And here’s the 15x zoom – there's no major deterioration or loss in picture quality:

We tried out the zoom function for ourselves, and here are our results:
1x vs 3x zoom:

15x zoom:

We also took a picture of the moon, and you can see how the optical zoom really pulls its weight here:

The optical zoom is also great for situations where you want to achieve a bokeh effect (ie: depth of field) in a natural way.
If you're going for the bokeh look, there are two ways to achieve this:
Generally speaking, pictures taken with Optical Zoom give you a more natural and authentic-looking depth of field.
In comparison, pictures taken on Portrait Mode may or may not look natural.
Depending on the quality of the software algorithm, edges or details of the subject might be inaccurately identified and accidentally blurred, leading to an unrealistic or 'fake' appearance.
In our pictures below, you can see how using a 3x zoom (vs the normal 1x zoom) achieves a natural-looking depth of field:

The 64-megapixel Telephoto portrait camera aside, the phone also comes with a 32-megapixel front camera, which is also impressive.
For a benchmark, other brands' flagship phones come with a 12-megapixel front camera.
This means the OPPO Reno10 Pro+ has a front camera with almost 3x the megapixels compared to that of other brands.
We tested it out by snapping a selfie:

No complaints here – the image is sharp and well-defined, with skin tones rendered pretty realistically (although there is a slight brightening effect).
Finally, let’s talk about low light photography.
Here, note that the OPPO Reno10 Pro+’s 64-megapixel Telephoto portrait camera comes with a large 1/2-inch sensor.
The size of the sensor means that you get better light sensitivity (which is crucial for low light photography).

Left: Competitor, Right: OPPO Reno10 Pro+
The OPPO Reno10 Pro+ looks distinctly different from its predecessors in the Reno lineup.
Its predecessors, including phones in the Reno7 and Reno8 series, showcased straight edges and rounded corners.
In contrast, OPPO’s latest phone takes a bold departure from this design, featuring a display that curves down on the sides.

Is a curved or flat display better? It ultimately boils down to personal preference.
Curved displays can provide a more immersive viewing experience, especially when watching videos or playing games. Some users appreciate the wraparound effect that makes content feel closer to their field of vision.
On the other hand, flat displays offer a more consistent viewing experience across the entire screen, as there are no potential distortions caused by the curvature. You can expect text and images to be uniform from edge to edge.
The phone is available in 2 colours - Glossy Purple and Silvery Grey.
The Reno10 Pro+ 5G’s comes with a 6.74-inch curved display and 1 billion colour display.
The ‘1 billion’ isn’t just a figure of speech – this literally means that the phone can accurately reproduce 1 billion colours, which translates into more life-like and vibrant visuals.
According to the brand, this is 64x the typical number of colours found on most smartphones.
We did find the visuals clear and crisp, with the curved display providing good viewing angles.
The Reno10 Pro+ comes with Dual Track Stereo Speakers.
One of its speakers is located at the top left corner of the phone, and the other is located at the bottom right.
The speakers are serviceable and we have no major complaints about them, but they’re definitely not the star of the show.
If you’re new to OPPO, one important thing to know is that it operates on ColorOS 13, which is a custom Android-based operating system developed by OPPO.
In simple terms, ColorOS 13 is an Android OS with a “skin” that changes the visual design, layout, and other features.
Here’s how it looks:

For Android users, you’ll find it relatively easy to get used to ColorOS 13.
There are some differences in the interface and the way you navigate through the system, but the learning curve isn’t too steep.
You also have full access to Google apps with ColorOS 13, including Google Play Services, Google backup and Google location history.
Aesthetics-wise, ColorOS 13 offers plenty of customisation for themes, wallpapers and other visual elements.
Here are a few theme examples:

Finally, one of the ColorOS features that’s commonly talked about is Edge Lighting.
This is a feature that lets the edges of your phone light up when a notification comes in (while your screen is locked).
Functionality-wise, this feature ensures that you don't miss important notifications and calls when your phone is on silent mode.
And aesthetics-wise, it’s a cool feature as well.
Our only gripe would be that Edge Lighting is now less noticeable than before.
With previous versions of the ColorOS, the Edge Lighting was more obvious – the entire phone would light up with the colour you’ve chosen.
But with the most recent ColorOS update, the phone only lights up halfway on the sides.

The OPPO Reno10 Pro+ comes with a 4700mAh battery, which falls just short of the 5000mAh battery that we’ve come to expect from most mid-range smartphones.
But after testing out the battery, we were pleasantly surprised.
The battery life is long-lasting, and it doesn't drain quickly.
We tested it by streaming a video – and the battery only drained by 1% after 54 minutes of streaming 🤯

(Editor’s note: Because we couldn’t believe the results and thought it might be a fluke, we redid the test again. On the second try, we had similar results – the battery drained by 1% after 51 minutes of streaming, which is pretty amazing.)
After an entire day of usage (including taking pictures, streaming videos, playing games), we had 42% battery left.
Charging-wise, the OPPO Reno10 Pro+ comes equipped with 100W SuperVOOC charging.
It’s said to be able to charge from 0% to 100% in less than 30 minutes, and from 0 to 50% in 9.5 minutes.
Again, we put this to the test – and it worked!
Note that you need to be using the charger head provided by OPPO in order for the SuperVOOC charging to work.
Once you plug it in with the charger head, you should see “Ultra fast charging...” on the screen, complete with a SuperVOOC graphic.
If you’re charging the phone via the USB cable, there's no SuperVOOC charging (and it charges a lot more slowly).
One feature that’s exclusive to the OPPO Reno10 Pro+ is the fact that it comes with an infrared blaster.
This allows you to use your phone as a remote control to control your home appliances.

Here’s the cool part – this is not limited to just smart home devices.
If you have other devices that aren’t smart, but have infrared (IR) technology, you can use your OPPO phone to control those too.
An example is your air-conditioner – virtually all air-conditioners come with IR technology, even if they’re not smart.
In testing the function out, we used our OPPO Reno10 Pro+ phone to turn our air-conditioning on and off, and to change the temperature.
It was really easy to do this – just open the 'IR remote' app on the phone, and follow the steps.
Once you’ve got your appliances connected, you can then go into the app to control your appliances:

In the interest of a fair review, we also recruited people of different age groups (and varying levels of tech savviness) to try out the function.
Everyone was able to figure it out easily, with no major issues.
The OPPO Reno10 Pro+ boasts an array of impressive features that contribute to its overall excellence, including its remarkable camera, stunning display, and robust high-end chipset.
Additionally, its battery life and charging speed are also key strengths.
Does this mean that the phone is perfect? No.
There are a few things to keep in mind, such as the fact that the phone doesn’t come with wireless charging, and the fact that the Edge Lighting feature is (arguably) less attractive than before.
But these are minor details – they're hardly deal-breakers to the average consumer.
So, for the everyday user, this phone emerges as a standout option.
It ticks the boxes where it truly matters, and captures the essence of what most users seek in a smartphone.
