Singtel roaming plans: Which plan is right for you?

So you’re interested in getting one of Singtel’s roaming plans, but you’re not sure where to start.

Which one do you choose? Which one is right for you?

Don’t worry, it’s not as mind-boggling as it seems.

In this article, we'll discuss the details of Singtel's data roaming plans, so you can figure out which to use.

We’ll cover:

Singtel’s roaming plans fall into two categories:

ReadyRoam plans, which are for folks travelling to any destination
DataRoam plans, which are for folks who travel to Australia and Malaysia frequently

Let’s take a closer look at these plans.

ReadyRoam plans

Here’s a quick look at the different ReadyRoam plans:

Most of the ReadyRoam plans cover multiple destinations, so you can use these on multi-leg trips.

Assuming you hit up Italy and Spain in a single Europe trip, you can use the same ReadyRoam Worldwide plan for both legs of the trip – you don’t need to get a different plan for each destination.

The only exception is ReadyRoam Neighbour, which can be used in Indonesia, Malaysia OR Thailand (not all three countries).

Check out the different ReadyRoam plans and the destinations they cover.

DataRoam plans

If you’re one who frequently goes to Malaysia or Australia (for work, or perhaps you have family there), DataRoam is for you.

Here’s a quick look at the DataRoam plans:

Let’s say you LOVE visiting JB, and you’re there pretty much every weekend.

Instead of getting a SIM card each time, just activate DataRoam Monthly (Malaysia) - this will give you access to roaming data for one month (following your bill cycle).

Here’s a bonus tip: There are also DataRoam plans for inflight and cruise travel.

How Singtel’s roaming plans compare to other roaming options

Singtel's roaming plans aside, you have other options such as:

Buying a local SIM card
Buying an eSIM

What’s the difference with each option? Let’s take a look.

Option 1: Buying a local SIM card

Many travellers opt for buying a local SIM card once they reach their destination.

It sounds simple enough: just swap out your current SIM card and start using the local network right away.

SIM card

However, there are a few things to keep in mind with local SIM cards.

Firstly, there’s the hassle of physically changing SIM cards, where you need to be extra careful not to misplace or damage your original SIM card.

Plus, if you're using a local SIM card, you won’t be able to receive SMSes, use your OTP, or take important calls on your Singapore mobile line.

For example, say you’re trying to buy BLACKPINK or Taylor Swift concert tickets while you’re overseas, but you need to be able to use your OTP.

You won’t be able to do that if you’re using a local SIM card. For that reason, we still recommend roaming plans over local SIM cards!

Option 2: Buying an eSIM

An eSIM is an electronic SIM card.

Option 2: Buying an eSIM

To use an eSIM, you would need to purchase it on an eSIM app, then activate it once you’ve reached your destination. You simply activate it on your phone – you don’t need to physically swap out your card.

This sounds good in theory, but again, there are a few things to keep in mind.

First, activating the eSIM can be a headache when you reach your destination.

Just do a quick Google search for “activating eSIM problem”, and you’ll see that it’s a relatively common issue – many people face problems with activating their eSIM cards.

And unlike when you buy a normal SIM card, you can’t go to the counter and ask someone for help.

Secondly, some older devices aren't eSIM compatible.

You can do a quick Google to find out which – but if you’re using a phone that was purchased in the last 1-3 years and NOT before that, you should be safe.

Which roaming plan is right for you?

Choosing the right overseas data roaming plan can make all the difference when it comes to staying connected while travelling.

Let's break it down into a few scenarios, based on your travelling style.

Which roaming plan is right for you?

If you love taking short trips to neighbouring countries, check out ReadyRoam Neighbour.

ReadyRoam Neighbour is applicable to neighbouring countries, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, or Thailand.

Fees for these plans start from just $5 – they're really affordable.

If you're the type who plans that one epic vacation each year, check out ReadyRoam Asia or Worldwide.

ReadyRoam plans have a 30 day validity period, and they are tailor-made for longer vacations and travellers exploring multiple countries at a time.

With ReadyRoam Asia, the plan can be used across 18 countries in Asia.

With ReadyRoam Worldwide, the plan can be used across 81 countries worldwide.

This makes it easy for you to travel across countries, such as if you’re doing a big Europe trip!

If you often travel to Malaysia and Australia, check out DataRoam Monthly.

DataRoam Monthly consists of two specialised plans - DataRoam Monthly Malaysia and DataRoam Monthly Australia.

As the names imply, they’re for people who travel frequently to these countries.

Now, you might be wondering, what’s the difference between ReadyRoam Neighbour (which we just recommended for short trips to Malaysia) and DataRoam Monthly Malaysia?

DataRoam gives you more data, which means it costs a bit more.

With DataRoam, you also get the option to sign up for a three-month contract and get more data every month.

So ReadyRoam Neighbour is great for people who do short trips to Malaysia, and DataRoam Monthly Malaysia is good for people who visit Malaysia very regularly and need more data.
