What do people think about Google Pixel phones?

Pixel phones are quickly growing in popularity in Singapore, with Pixel users and fans seemingly emerging around every corner.

What's the hype about Pixel phones? Are you missing out if you're not using a Pixel?

In this article, we pick the brains of 6 Pixel users, and get them to tell us why they’re fans of Pixel phones.

#1: Google Pixel’s camera

'I am a staunch Pixel fan because of its camera (no surprises there!)

The Pixel’s camera is really top-notch, and the images it produces are beautiful.

Whenever I hang out with my friends, I’m the designated photo-taker, because everyone loves the photos from my Pixel phone.'

- Nicole, 26, Graphic Designer

#2: Google Pixel’s software and UI

'Pixel’s UI is by far the best.

Pixel phones are highly responsive with no lagginess, and they’re just so intuitive to use.

When I compare it with other phone UIs, the other UIs feel very clunky. Animations are choppier and not as smooth, and there's a general lack of aesthetic sensibility.

I also love certain Pixel-exclusive features, like how I can answer a call by saying 'answer', and turn off an alarm by saying 'stop'.'

- Jason, 36, Project Manager

#3: Google Pixel’s price-to-quality ratio

'The price is just unbeatable for its quality.

I bought my Pixel 6a for just $600 a couple of years ago, and was blown away with the camera quality, how intuitive the OS was, and the overall user experience.'

- Amelia, 41, Tech Sales

#4: Google Pixel’s (lack of) bloatware

Source: Made by Google

'I absolutely hate it when phones come with a bunch of bloatware.

As a user, I should be able to have control over what apps I want to install and use on my device.

I’ve tried almost every phone brand there is, and Pixel is definitely the brand with the least bloatware.'

- Jia Rong, 28, Pharmacist

Editor’s note: Bloatware refers to pre-installed software or applications on a device that may not be essential for the device's core functionality. These apps can take up storage space, consume system resources and lead to a cluttered and less efficient user experience.

#5: Google Pixel’s software updates

Source: Made by Google

'Other than the typical things like the great camera and the responsiveness of the phone, I also love how Google handles its updates.

Once you see the prompt to update your phone (and accept), it quietly installs updates in the background.

Once it’s done, you do a restart, and that’s it.

It’s a lot smoother than what you get on other phone brands, where your phone may be unusable for the entire duration when updates are installing.'

- Xavier, 29, Developer

Editor’s note: On a related note, Google is also highly committed to prolonging the longevity of its devices by providing software updates. The Pixel 8 and 8 Pro will get updates for at least 7 years (including security and software updates, and potentially new feature drops as well.)

#6: Google Assistant

Source: Google Blog

'I utilise my phone’s AI assistant a lot, and I find that Google Assistant is way better than other AI assistants. It understands my commands better and carries out tasks more accurately.'

- Gladys, 25, Financial Advisor

Editor’s note: The general consensus (that we’ve heard anecdotally, at least!) is that Google Assistant works better than other AI assistants out there. One potential reason is because Google Assistant is trained on vast amounts of data from Google, and this enhances its ability to understand and respond to a wide range of queries.

Google Assistant also seamlessly integrates with Google's ecosystem of services, making it highly efficient for tasks like setting reminders, sending emails, or accessing your Google Calendar.

A final word on Google Pixel phones

What’s not to love about Google Pixel phones?

As Pixel users have shared, Pixel phones have great cameras, and are responsive and intuitive to use.

They also come with minimal bloatware, and are outfitted with Google Assistant (which understands voice commands well.)

And perhaps the most important factor for Singaporeans, who are all about scoring a good deal... Pixel phones offer amazing quality at a decent price 😉
