What are Samsung Galaxy FE phones?

Samsung S23 FE

Samsung's Galaxy FE phones, or 'Fan Edition' phones, are essentially wallet-friendly versions of the flagship S series phones.

Here’s how it works: each year, Samsung looks at the latest S series phones to identify the most popular and sought-after features.

They then incorporate these standout features into the Fan Edition (FE) models for that year.

This strategy came about from Samsung’s desire to make phones more affordable when the Covid-19 pandemic first hit.

Another reason was to offer consumers a chance to experience flagship specifications at a lower price.

The newest addition to the Galaxy FE series, the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE, launched online on October 10th 2023, and was made available for regular retail purchase on October 20th.

The Galaxy S23 FE comes in various colours, including Mint, Graphite, Purple, Cream.

Samsung also offers two exclusive colours on their website – Blue and Orange.

What features are included in the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE?

Now that you know the story behind Samsung’s Galaxy FE phones, let’s look at their latest FE model, the Galaxy S23 FE.

Galaxy S23 FE: Display specs

The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE boasts a 6.4-inch, AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate.

And with a display resolution of 1080 x 2340, images and content will appear crystal clear.

This Samsung smartphone has an impressive brightness of 1,450 nits and comes with Vision Booster, which automatically adapts the screen's brightness to its surroundings and makes your display more dynamic.

This feature lets you comfortably consume content and view everything on your screen in bright sunlight.

How does the Galaxy S23 FE’s display compare to that of the Galaxy S23?

The Galaxy S23 FE's display specs are mostly similar to the Galaxy S23, except for its size and display technology.

The Galaxy S23's screen is 6.1 inches and utilises a Dynamic AMOLED display.

This means that the Galaxy S23 FE is slightly bigger than the Galaxy S23, but won't have a display that's as vibrant.

Galaxy S23 FE: Design

The Galaxy S23 FE comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 5, making it lightweight and durable.

For context, this glass is capable of withstanding a 1.2 metre drop.

The phone also has a matte silver aluminium frame to give it both a sleek look and a tough build.

How does the Galaxy S23 FE’s design compare to that of the Galaxy S23?

While most aspects of the Galaxy S23 FE are similar to the Galaxy S23, there's one key difference: the Galaxy S23 has Gorilla Glass Victus 2, which makes it more durable and less prone to scratches.

Galaxy S23 FE: Camera

When we're getting a new phone, one thing we can't wait to check out is the camera. 📸

Despite being a budget-friendly alternative to Samsung's flagship phones, the Galaxy S23 FE doesn't compromise on camera quality.

It features a range of lenses:

10MP selfie camera

12MP ultra-wide camera

50MP wide-angle camera

8MP 3x optical zoom telephoto camera for close-up details.

In addition to its lens variety, the Galaxy S23 FE also includes the iconic night mode feature from the S series, 'Nightography', which excels in low-light photography and videography.

When it comes to videography, the Galaxy S23 FE’s main camera is capable of shooting 8K videos at 24fps, while the front camera can capture 4K videos at 60fps - perfect for high-quality vlogging and video calls.

To top it all off, the phone also comes with a Photo Remaster feature, which enhances and sharpens blurry pictures.

How does the Galaxy S23 FE’s camera compare to that of the Galaxy S23?

The Galaxy S23 has a 12MP selfie camera and is capable of shooting 8K videos at 30fps with its main camera.

While the Galaxy S23 FE features a lower-resolution MP selfie camera as compared to the Galaxy S23 (10MP vs 12MP), the difference isn’t huge.

A 10MP camera is also generally considered decent for amateur photographers, especially if you’re not intending to create large-format prints from your pictures.

Galaxy S23 FE: Battery life

The Galaxy S23 FE has an incredible battery life with up 22 hours of watch time and 66 hours of listening time.

If you compare this to that of the Galaxy S23, the Galaxy S23 has an even longer battery life (up to 71 hours of listening time.)

That said, 66 hours of battery life is already a lot – and the incremental benefit that you get out of 71 hours vs 66 hours might not be that much 😉
