The network is becoming business infrastructure for hospitality

For years, hospitality networking was largely discussed in terms of connectivity: Was the WiFi fast enough? Was coverage reliable? Could guests get online wherever they were? Those questions still matter. But they are no longer enough. The network now sits underneath a much broader digital hospitality experience. Loyalty platforms, contactless check-in, mobile services, in-room streaming, connected devices and AI-driven personalisation increasingly depend on infrastructure that can connect locations, systems, applications and data consistently. The commercial implications are becoming clearer. Hotel technology is increasingly being viewed as a revenue centre, while personalisation can lift hotel revenue by 10–15%.¹

These hotel-sector indicators point to a broader shift across hospitality: technology is becoming more closely tied to the experience operators deliver and the value they create. Investment is following, 86% of hoteliers plan to increase technology investment, and 30% of IT budgets are going to new implementations.²

But investing in more digital capabilities does not necessarily create a more connected hospitality enterprise. A loyalty platform cannot deliver a consistent experience if one location operates on different connectivity contracts, hardware and security policies from another. Add more locations, brands and markets, and the complexity multiplies. Industry surveys describe this fragmented environment as a "tech jungle", with integration and fragmentation cited as the top obstacles operators face.³

The challenge is therefore shifting from connectivity alone to orchestration: how to make infrastructure across an increasingly distributed hospitality footprint operate as one environment.

ASEAN: where fragmentation becomes harder to manage

Southeast Asia brings that challenge into particularly sharp focus. Three structural forces are converging.
 

1. The pace of travel growth 

ASEAN visitor numbers climbed from 26 million to roughly 127 million⁴ in recent years, while intra-regional travel rose from 37% of arrivals to 45%.  That growth creates opportunity across the hospitality ecosystem. It also puts pressure on operators expanding their footprint across destinations and markets. Every new location can introduce another connectivity contract, configuration, vendor relationship and set of security requirements. As an organisation grows, a location-by-location approach becomes progressively harder for central IT teams to govern. Growth, in other words, magnifies fragmentation.


2. The quality of capital flowing into the sector
Asia Pacific hotel investment is forecast to reach roughly USD 13.3 billion in 2026, up from USD 11.9 billion in 2025, as operational fundamentals increasingly drive capital allocation.⁵  Singapore targeted S$29–31 billion in tourism receipts for 2025, while Malaysia set a goal of 31.4 million arrivals for Visit Malaysia 2026.⁶

For hospitality operators, this raises the expectations placed on the underlying technology environment. A premium digital experience is difficult to deliver consistently when different locations operate with different connectivity, performance levels, security policies and capabilities. As hospitality businesses scale, infrastructure consistency increasingly becomes part of delivering a consistent brand experience.
 

3. The cross-border nature of guest data

Hospitality is inherently data-intensive and increasingly cross-border. A guest may interact with the same hospitality brand across several markets, while loyalty, booking, payment and digital-service ecosystems create multiple data touchpoints. Personal data protection laws are placing greater emphasis on how data is stored and processed, alongside requirements governing payment environments such as PCI DSS.⁷

The sector also presents an attractive attack surface. Hospitality ranks first among industries for payment card fraud frequency, with point-of-sale systems, WiFi networks and loyalty portals among the potential attack channels.⁸

Fragmentation makes that environment harder to manage. When individual locations maintain different security postures, data flows and audit environments, the organisation has more complexity to monitor and govern. Across growth, investment and data, the direction is similar: hospitality operators need infrastructure that can be managed as a connected regional environment rather than a collection of individual locations.

How the industry is responding

Parts of the market are already moving in this direction. When Nobu Hospitality rebuilt its infrastructure, it moved towards a single end-to-end wired, wireless and SD-WAN platform supporting its global footprint with limited on-site IT. Zero-trust security, connected devices and personalised guest experiences were among the drivers cited.⁹


Major networking vendors are responding to the same shift, bringing wired and wireless networking, security and analytics together within hospitality-focused, software-defined architectures.¹⁰
